Token counts are estimates (~4 characters per token) and vary a few percent by tokenizer.
How it works
Tokens are sub-word fragments. For ordinary English prose, one token is roughly four characters or about 0.75 words; code and non-Latin scripts use more tokens per character.
This estimate is tokenizer-agnostic and typically lands within 10% of the exact count reported by provider tokenizers.
Worked example
A 500-word article
500 words of English prose is roughly 670 tokens - about $0.0008 as input on GPT-5.
