How it works
For document extraction, use tokens measured after parsing rather than the file size in megabytes. A text PDF, a scanned document, and an image-heavy file can be billed differently. This text-token estimate does not model every image, audio, or video charge.
Longer prompts increase input spend. Compare sending the entire document with sending relevant excerpts, but include retrieval costs and test whether the excerpt still contains enough information. Check the provider’s pricing tier for your prompt length.
Worked example
Document processing pipeline
A pipeline processing 10,000 documents with 4,000 input tokens and a 400-token extraction per document uses 40 million input and 4 million output tokens. At illustrative rates of $0.30 input and $2.50 output per million, that is $12 + $10 = $22. A 10% retry rate raises it to $24.20 if retried calls have the same size. OCR, storage, and any separate media fees are not included.
